When you first begin playing FarmVille, the levels come easily. You can generally get enough experience to gain a level every week or so, and just about everything you do in the game gets you at least some experience. And, at the lowest levels, the number of experience points needed to reach the next level up isn't that much. And since you are trying to build your farm quickly, you'll be earning points without really trying all that hard.
But once you get to the higher levels, the amount of experience you need to reach the next level gets higher and higher. In addition, the bonuses us you get for helping your neighbors, or planting, plowing, or other day to day tasks are no longer enough to be meaningful in your quest to get to the next level. Once you reach the higher levels, there are things you can do in order to make it easier for you to gain levels.
FarmVille levelling strategy #1 - Keep building. Once you have a good sized farm, you should have a fairly good stream of revenue coming from your normal operations. This should mean that you have plenty of coins in your coffers. In some cases, you can very nearly buy your way up to the next level, by buying and constructing buildings and other top level items. Almost all items you buy give you some experience, but coin-for-coin, buildings are the best. Granted, you can only fit a finite amount of buildings on your farm, you will eventually run out of room. If you have enough coins, however, you can build and sell your buildings. You might take a loss in coins, but you don't lose experience. So you can build a building, get the points, sell it, then build another. You'll lose some coins in the process, but coins are a lot easier to replace than experience.
FarmVille levelling strategy #2 - Choose different crops. When you first start out, you probably chose the crops that would help you earn the most coins, figuring out which crop would yield the highest return. Once you have a stable base of income, and are more interested in raising a level than maxing out your coin production, it's time to rethink that strategy. You may want to consider changing to crops that earn the most experience, instead of the most coin. Additionally, you should consider going with crops that grow in a faster rate, so that you can harvest them faster, and earn experience more quickly. This generally means planting crops that take a day or less to grow to harvesting. They will give you the same amount of experience, but they'll do it much faster, allowing you to churn your experience better. If you maximize for coin production, and you get a much better return on your investment, but take much longer to get to the next level.
FarmVille levelling strategy #3 - Strawberries! This is a tip that requires you to be very active in your playing. Strawberries (and blueberries) take only four hours to grow. They only provide one experience point per planting, but if you are able to be around the game fast enough, you can earn 4-6 experience points per day, per plot of land. It's nearly impossible to beat this on a per/day basis.
