Peter Pan (Widescreen Edition) Peter Pan (Widescreen Edition)
List Price: $9.99
Sale Price: $2.05
Used From: $0.96

Fine casting, genuinely special effects, and a keen combination of whimsy and danger make this Peter Pan the one to beat among all previous adaptations of J.M. Barrie's classic children's fantasy. The technical advances of CGI make the magic of Barrie's tale come alive, and the spectacular effects combined with luminous live action create an action-packed Neverland that's both believable and breathtakingly artificial, like a Maxfield Parrish landscape springing vividly to life before your eyes. More important, however, is the fact that director P.J. Hogan (whose splendid films include Muriel's Wedding and My Best Friend's Wedding) has taken care to develop a substantial, pre-adolescent affection between the boyish sprite Peter (Jeremy Sumpter) and resourceful London girl Wendy, played by Rachel Hurd-Wood in a marvelous screen debut. This emotional bond--and the mixed blessing of Peter's eternal childhood--is what gives Hogan's Peter Pan its rich emotional subtext, added to an already bountiful adventure that's equal parts delightful and menacing, especially when the villainous pirate Captain Hook (Jason Isaacs, doubling as Wendy's father) threatens to spoil the fun. With a mischievously dazzling Tinker Bell (played by Swimming Pool's Ludivine Sagnier) and no expense spared on its lavish Australian production, this Peter Pan gets it entirely right by presenting childhood as fun and frightening, in all its wondrous joys and sorrows. --Jeff Shannon

U Turn U Turn
List Price: $9.99
Sale Price: $4.53
Used From: $1.11

Oliver Stone used such words as "liberating" and "fun" to talk about U Turn's relatively quick production schedule of 42 days. Stone's ideas of film fun, however, are something older generations would call sick. This film is a Southwestern noir tale about Bobby Cooper (Sean Penn), a hotshot who is stuck in the tight confines of Superior, Arizona, when his car breaks down. His subsequent adventure is a meatball comedy--loud, obnoxious, and violent, and stuffed with diffused light, a hot cast, and a no-fat Ennio Morricone score. This film has plenty of odd characters, but you never really find out much about them. Bobby's first encounters include a repulsive mechanic (Billy Bob Thornton under the grease) and a blind Indian (Jon Voight under the makeup). Then there's Grace McKenna (a sizzling Jennifer Lopez), who is as dangerous as the curves of her red sundress. Bobby's got time to kill, and Grace seems more than willing. Unfortunately, it seems that Bobby has never seen a movie such as A Touch of Evil; if he had, he would know it can only get worse. About the time Grace's husband, Jake (Nick Nolte), shows up, Bobby is knee-deep in murder plots and double-crosses. The first 40 minutes or so are "fun" to a point. Penn is the perfect near-creep to root for, and as he wanders back into town after meeting Grace, the eclectic characters pile up. But soon it gets monotonous, tiring, and just plain ugly. And when incest and bloody fights begin, the fun is gone. If Penn weren't so solid an actor and able to be empathetic in the most morose situations, the movie would be unwatchable at stretches. Lopez makes another good impression, but this is not a performance that stands out. Nolte, raspy and ill-looking, is the Lee Marvin of the '90s. Before U Turn is over, you are already wondering if Oliver Stone will do something else, something more important, soon. --Doug Thomas

Driving to Las Vegas to pay off a gambling debt, small-time hustler Sean Penn finds himself stranded in a remote Arizona desert town and interacting with its off-the-wall residents. Chief among these are wealthy realtor Nick Nolte and his seductive wife Jennifer Lopez, each of whom offers Penn money to bump off the other. Director Oliver Stone's noir thriller also stars Billy Bob Thornton, Powers Boothe, Clare Danes, Jon Voight. 125 min. Standard and Widescreen (Enhanced); Soundtracks: English Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital stereo Surround, French Dolby Digital stereo, Spanish Dolby Digital stereo; Subtitles: English, French, Spanish; theatrical trailer.

The Sandlot 2 The Sandlot 2
List Price: $14.98
Sale Price: $6.15
Used From: $0.43

A decade has passed in the small town where the original Sandlot gang banded together during the summer of '62 to play baseball and battle the Beast. Now comes the sequel, a campy romp back to the dugout where nine new kids descend on the diamond only to discover that a descendant of the Beast lives in Mr. Mertle's backyard--a monster of mythical proportions known as "The Great Fear." Director/writer David Evans cleverly ties his two films together by introducing Johnnie Smalls, kid brother of Scotty Smalls ("You're killin' me, Smalls") who is well-versed in the legendary struggle for possession of the Babe Ruth baseball. Smalls befriends the sandlot gang (which now includes three girls) and its leader, David Vincent Durango, and relates the rumor of "a mutated, insane Bigfoot dog thing" behind the left field fence. Summer unfolds with baseball rivalries, rocket launchers, and the infamous Carnival kissing booth, but fate will forever change the history of the sandlot when a crisis forces Smalls and Durango to join forces against The Fear. Regardless of one's sentiments on sequels, Evans' writing in this remake is nearly as fresh and full of memorable quips as the original, including his characteristically understated narration. And while the film may be faulted for its forced melodrama and unseasoned cast, James Earl Jones lends his star appeal and the 70s soundtrack will make you wish for the days when fireworks were legal. Rated PG for profanity and raunchy humor. (Ages 6 to 14) --Lynn Gibson

Scotty Smalls moves to a new neighborhood with his mom and stepdad, and wants to learn to play baseball. The neighborhood baseball guru Rodriquez takes Smalls under his wing, and soon he's part of the local baseball buddies. They fall into adventures involving baseball, treehouse sleep-ins, the desirous lifeguard at the local pool, the snooty rival ball team, and the travelling fair. (more listed below)

Once upon a time, there was a guy. Let's call him Dan. He worked for a major courier company, delivering parcels on the same route just about every day.

There was one particular business on his route where a particularly attractive receptionist worked. Let's call her Maryanne. She had been on the job for a few weeks, and our hero had gradually turned up the banter each time he had seen her there.

It was only occasionally that this particular business received parcels, so he knew he had to make the most of every opportunity when he saw her.

Finally, one glorious day, Dan gathered up his nerve and asked Maryanne for her phone number.

She immediately and noticeably brightened up, and eagerly scribbled her number on the back of a business card. She handed it to Dan with a smile, and said..."Yes! Call me!"

After the customary three days had passed, courier-dude texted her one bright morning. "Hey there, Maryanne. It's Dan. What's up?"

Dan waited. But there was no answer. When evening had come, and he couldn't take it anymore, he fired off another text. "Hey Maryanne. I'm sure you're busy, but get back to me when you get a chance."

But there was still no answer. Only crickets chirping and pins dropping.

As fortune would have it, Dan had a package the next day that required delivery where Maryanne worked.

Nervously, he walked in the door. As soon as he made eye contact with Maryanne, she looked away immediately. Obviously sensing the awkwardness of the situation, neither said a word to each other as Dan dropped off the package.

About an hour after leaving, Dan couldn't get Maryanne off his mind. This time, he texted her the following message: "OK, Maryanne, what's wrong? Did I upset you somehow?"

You guessed it...no answer.

Having pretty much lost all hope of dating Maryanne, Dan's emotional state turned to anger and resentment toward her. "How come there aren't any pretty women out there who don't play games? And how come they are all so flighty and immature?"

Two days later, Dan had another package to be delivered where Maryanne worked. When he walked in, Maryanne once again avoided eye contact with renewed awkwardness.

But Dan's frustration got the best of him. "OK, look", Dan said, "I texted you a whole bunch of times, and I can't believe you've completely ignored me! Where do you get off flirting with guys and looking all happy when they ask you for your phone number, when all you're going to do is mess with their heads!?"

The answer Dan received was as terse as they come.

Maryanne had given Dan her home phone number...which was a land line, of course.
