The brightly structured world of Thomas the Tank Engine and his friends will appeal to the orderly side of preschoolers as they help rescue a derailed engine, put it back on the tracks, spiff it up, and get it back to work. If your older toddler glows when told he or she is helpful or a hard worker, this CD-ROM will put them in junior train-engineer heaven. The story begins with an engine named James eagerly heading out to get more coal for the other engines, but things don't go quite as planned; James has an accident on a sharp corner because he's being too hasty. Kids get to help rescue James and restore him to his shiny, bright-red self by completing eight activities that will test their problem-solving skills, spatial abilities, and deductive reasoning. They must find James, properly assemble crane gears to get him lifted back onto the track, collect coal, find the proper parts, and install them on James by listening to whistles, looking at train parts, and then putting everything in its place. Once James has a full tank of water and a full bin of coal, kids get to drive the repaired engine. This is the best part of this friendly CD-ROM, as it demonstrates to little locomotive fans how steam engines work, from shoveling coal to goosing the throttle. Each activity has three levels, and Trouble on the Track also has clickable surprises interspersed throughout each activity, something that earlier Thomas offerings lacked. Kids can visit Sir Topham Hatt's office to see and print their certificates (they get one for every level of each activity they complete) or various pictures that they can color, turn into puzzles, or simply hang on their walls. Everyone from the Horrid Lorry to the Troublesome Trucks is here, and Thomas the Tank Engine fans will enjoy this program as it gently chugs along. (Ages 3 and older) --Anne Erickson This CD-ROM allows children to enter the play world of Thomas and his friends, and help them get ready for the big festival on the Island of Sodor. They can get Thomas ready for the journey at the engine shed, clear the tracks, make music on the bandstand, and help bring passengers to the festival. Seven engaging activities, rich 3-D animated graphics, and printable certificates of completion are designed to keep little Thomas fans interested. Opportunities abound to practice color matching, shape sorting, counting, and more. And fans won't want to miss new video sequences featuring Thomas and his friends. It's Thomas and Friends to the Rescue!Product InformationJames has derailed and it's up to Thomas and all of his friends to help him get back on track. This affects everyone on the Island of Sodor from the Horrid Lorry who has todo James' work to Sir Topham Hatt who must organize the efforts of the otherengines. Thomas & Friends Building the New Line List Price: $19.99 Sale Price: $14.71 Used From: $9.89 |
The Island of Sodor comes to life on tracks you design and build! There is plenty of work to be done and surprises around every turn! Includes three places on the Island to visit: The Farm, the Quarry and the Docks. Sir Topham Hatt is facing infrastructure problems: the island of Sodor needs more lines if it is to accommodate its increasing number of rail travelers, and Sir Topham has asked for your help in Building the New Line. Load the CD-ROM, sign in, and meet Thomas and all his familiar friends. Choose "Junior" or "Senior" Engineer mode, depending on ability (or confidence!), and start laying your track. Once your track is in place, move through the activities to deliver cargo and add landscaping features such as trees, bridges, tunnels, and so on. Once you have your track laid out to your satisfaction, advance to "Play Mode" and bring your new line to life. Your engine can now travel around the track, interacting with all the other familiar personalities and sights of Sodor. Click on the items you put in place in build mode and complete the resulting activities. For example, click on the hay bales in the Farm Yard and watch as they spill on the track. Get your engine to help clear them away, so the track is safe and debris-free. Switch tracks, control your speed, and visit the Works if you need any maintenance. Similar to previous CD-ROMs in the Thomas & Friends series, the sound and graphical quality of the package is great, and all the characters are faithful reproductions of their book and screen counterparts. The package is fun and will amuse as well as challenge first PC users, as they learn mouse control and hand-to-eye coordination, as well as other basic PC skills (clicking, moving, cause-and-effect of onscreen activities). There are plenty of rewards to keep little ones interested, and lots of fun to be had along the way. (Ages 3 to 5)--Susan Naylor The Island of Sodor is busier than ever and it's up to kids ages 3 to 5 to lay down new tracks to help Thomas and the other engines keep things running smoothly. Customize five different track layouts, choose your engine--Thomas, James, Edward, or Percy--and click into play mode to see your creation come to life. Be ready, though--you never know what surprises you may encounter. Building the New Line brings track building onto the computer screen in a brilliant 3-D-like environment and is designed with one objective--Thomas & Friends fun! |

Ultimate Wargame Collection 2: World War 2 List Price: $29.99 Used From: $40.00 |
Many collections of older games are unquestionably worth the price, but the quality of the offerings in the Ultimate Wargame WWII Collection Volume 2 is so spotty we'd pause before spending $20 on it. Sure you get a great game like Silent Hunter: Commander's Edition, but then you're also paying for the laughably bad Luftwaffe Commander. This package still represents a significant value over buying the games separately, so WWII buffs may want to just go ahead and take the good with the bad. Luftwaffe Commander is the biggest stinker in the bunch, and we can't come up with a single reason it was even released in the first place. The graphics are bad, the flight models are abysmal, and that about sums things up. Worst of all, it was released after several vastly superior WWII flight simulations came out, and you'd be better off spending money on any of those games than this tragically flawed coaster. Fighting Steel simulates the naval battles of the period and isn't nearly as bad. Here you become admiral of a virtual fleet of WWII battleships, destroyers, and other surface vessels, all rendered in full 3-D (although the game runs at a low resolution). Battling with the big guns is fun for a while, but we soon were longing for aircraft carriers, submarines, or anything else that could add some variety and complexity to the gameplay. Panzer Commander puts you in charge of a squad of tanks. Gameplay is a little too simplistic, and the other members of your squad are complete idiots (they get stuck on walls and buildings all the time), but it's still a great deal of fun. The game models lots of different tanks, and their varying weapons systems require vastly different tactics for effective use. Half the fun is in watching your tanks bounce around from an outside view, as their suspensions are modeled in terrific detail. Finally there is Silent Hunter, which is probably the best WWII submarine simulator of all time. The game is aging well, since its crisp graphics were good to begin with, and the tense gameplay never loses any of its charm. There are enough difficulty settings to satisfy both novices and die-hards, and the historical information included on the disc gave us a fascinating look at the troubles real-world submarine crews faced in the Pacific theater of WWII. Don't miss this one if submarine simulations interest you. --T. Byrl Baker Pros: Silent Hunter is perhaps the best WWII submarine simulation ever released Fighting Steel is fun--while it lasts One of the few collections that gives players air, land, and sea simulations Cons: Luftwaffe Commander is one of the worst flight simulators ever released Panzer Commander has infuriating flaws that put an enormous dent in its fun factor |
