Free Willy: Escape from Pirate's Cove Free Willy: Escape from Pirate's Cove
List Price: $14.96
Sale Price: $1.89
Used From: $1.18

More a retelling of the original 1993 Free Willy film than a third sequel in the series, Free Willy: Escape from Pirate's Cove is the story of a young whale who's separated from his pod, used in a moneymaking scheme, and befriended by a young girl who ultimately makes a huge difference in the young whale's life. The film stars Bindi Irwin (daughter of the late Crocodile Hunter Steve Irwin and host of the TV nature documentary series Bindi the Jungle Girl) in her first film, and she is surprisingly believable and passionate in her role as Kirra, if not entirely polished. Beau Bridges plays Kirra's grandfather, Gus, a down-on-his-luck gambler and owner of a dilapidated amusement park who's obsessed with making money. When Kirra's father is injured, Gus is unexpectedly saddled with caring for his granddaughter over the summer. Bongo Mbutuma, Siyabulela Ramba, and Stephen Jennings round out the cast. When a young orca becomes trapped in the lagoon at Gus's ocean-side amusement park in South Africa, Kirra and her grandfather clash over the whale's future. Kirra quickly dubs the whale Willy and pleads with her grandfather to set him free, but Gus wants to use Willy to boost profits. When a mammal rescue group determines that Willy's underdeveloped echolocation makes him unfit to survive alone in the wild, Kirra bristles at their suggestion to put Willy down, and she vows to rehabilitate the orca. Meanwhile, Kirra's grandfather contemplates selling Willy to a neighboring park owner at a handsome profit, in hopes that he will have the necessary funds to properly house and care for Willy. More than just a story about right versus wrong, Free Willy: Escape from Pirate's Cove is an exploration of a much more complicated ethical dilemma in which the best course of action is unclear. As the characters each struggle to choose the right path, what becomes crystal clear is the power of perseverance and the personal growth that results from love, adversity, and challenge. While the CGI graphic scenes of the orca pods swimming are admittedly poor and some other aspects of this film could have been improved, Escape from Pirate's Cove is still a good family film with a heartfelt message. Bonus features include a fairly interesting featurette about filming on location in South Africa, Bindi's first movie diary, a quick look at the film's animal costars, two deleted scenes, and one outtake. The Blu-ray also features a pop-up trivia option that runs the length of the film. --Tami Horiuchi

This zombie survival shooter has been around for some time now, but I thought I would write a fresh review on it as the game is a timeless flash classic. Created by diseased productions that are also responsible for the development of the Thing Thing Games and Eternal Red, Endless Zombie Rampage holds no remorse in its deliverance of a blood festival. But don't worry if you're not the hack and slash horror type, the game is created more in a cartoon animation setting than in a realistic light, so it comes off more as a manga game than an eerie late night evil dead movie.

There are three types of game mode:

  • Defensive mode: Plays out in many different levels, each with an increased difficulty. You must overcome each levels army of zombies, using the experience points you gain; you can purchase additional weapons and power ups. The game starts with a simple pistol as your main source of defence.
  • Survival mode: Which allows you to take your pick from the large selection of advanced weaponry in order to try to survive the increasing on rush of zombie mutations.
  • Experimental mode: Allowing you to adjust the intensity of the zombie insurgence.

Endless Zombie Rampage is played at its best when choosing Defensive mode. Taking you through each weapon upgrade and level of difficulty step by step you must tackle the monsters with limited resources. It is therefore important to use your experience points wisely, if you upgrade a weapon too soon and settle for second best, you can easily be caught out with an inadequate primary weapon.

As previously mentioned the game is designed in cartoon graphics, yet it holds a degree of realism. The way the zombie corpses are splattered over the earth when disposed of is like an artist painting a Picasso with a bucket of blood and guts. The corpse of every single zombie you disembowel remains on the earth until the very end of the game, so expect a sea of red if you are competent enough to survive until the later levels.

The game play is also up to standard in Endless Zombie Rampage. It is very easy to manoeuvre your character around the map. The game is shot from an above angle, it is a good choice of view considering the task at hand, the view allows you to react quickly to where the next attack will come from and keeps you from loosing your way from the base that needs protecting. If the game was shot from a first person view at the same level of difficulty, you wouldn't have a hope of surviving, well maybe just a fools hope.

Aiming and firing a weapon is pretty accurate as well, you have a pin point cursor target that allows you to aim directly at the zombies heads, this helps dispose of them quickly. One thing to point out is you can also move and aim your target at the same time which comes in very handy when your attention is needed at multiple angles to your base.

The availability of weaponry is outstanding in this game. You are spoilt for choice with guns ranging from simple pistols such as the USP and Five Seven to Miniguns such as the GAU-8. The guns impact and firing affects are designed to a great level of detail, you can certainly feel and see the difference between having a simple pistol or a mini gun at your disposal. If you progress as far as being able to obtain the GAU-8 you will relish at the opportunity to massacre countless zombies with a seriously mean mother of a weapon. If you can't wait to get your hands on the powerful guns then simply try out survival mode with your choice of gun from the start, I believe this spoils the anticipation and reward that comes from having to fend off large hordes of zombies in defensive mode with a pistol, just to get enough points for that extra weapon upgrade.

Power up options are also available, with upgrades such as 'Bloodlust' where every drop of blood spilt counts for 1 experience point, this will see you rapidly collect experience points to obtain powerful weapons at a faster rate but the power up itself costs a considerable amount. Another one is 'Hollow Points' where bullets deal 10% extra damage.

It is the little details like this that put Endless Zombie Rampage apart from a lot of the other free online flash shooters. It would have been all too easy for Diseased Productions to have simply introduced a small collection of weapons and then launched the game with bare minimum content, but they chose to spend a lot of time on the weapons designs to delight fans. There's a clear intent that the designers wanted you to feel the power of holding a huge mini gun or laser canon in your hands.

The sound effects in the game serve to immerse you further into the survival plot. The background effects contain painful screams, weird groans and growls almost on a random level which adds to the games eeriness, it is a great choice for the main background sound.

If there is one downside to the game, it would have to be range of creatures; I think this is too restrictive. There are some variations in the zombie mutations but not enough to say this is a complete game. Introducing a boss feature would have been a smart move to make in defensive mode, a unique monster at the end of each level may have just given Endless Zombie Rampage enough variety to forgive its general monster inadequacy. Having said that, for a free online game it sure delivers in a lot of areas and I'd advise any reader to give the game a try.
