Great, concise help for business owners
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
After reading this book and thinking about the state of our economy, my quick take is this:
-When times were good, many business owners thrived, even if there were big holes in their marketing plan.
-Since there are fewer customers in general, business owners need to get smarter to survive, and to take a long hard look at how they are finding new clients.
Unlike a lot of books/products out there that are all about hyping some new "silver bullet", this book goes through the main points that business owners really need to hear AND apply.
I know, I know- it's always more exciting to chase what's shiny and new, but actually reading and applying what's in this book will be 10X more powerful than trying to market via Twitter or Facebook or whatever the gurus are hyping.
This book lays the foundation for a REAL marketing plan. Once that's in place, every new tactic or tool is just icing on the cake.
VERY usefull information

I've followed a lot of "gurus" when it comes to marketing. Jim puts everything into easy, step by step ideas. If you're finding it harder to make a buck these days, this is a great read! I'm buying more for MY clients!
A Must-read in this economy
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
How to Market Your Crap is an absolute necessity for any business owner, especially during this economic disaster. Jim teaches you how to really turn things around and make money despite economic downfalls. The marketing strategies you will learn from this book will change the way you think about marketing and see how marketing is one thing you can't afford to cut in a recession. Implementing Jim's teachings will drastically increase your income with the ROI you get from this book.
Not only is the book very useful, but the content is delivered in a very straight forward, yet very entertaining way. It will entertain you as you learn. Buy it! Use it! your company needs it! I know I will never put marketing on the back burner because of the things I've learned to increase profit.
"They Laughed When I Told Them The Title...But Then When I Started To Read..."
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
OK, I admit, I ripped of the title for this review from the famous headline "They laughed when I sat down at the piano...but when I started to play..."
I don't like the title. It isn't offensive, but I found it abrasive to say mentally.
But I plowed past my little prejudice, and bought the book. I'm glad I did.
I bought the book because Jim Ackerman is going to be a keynote speaker at a trade show I'll also be speaking at.
To be frank, 95% of the content has been said before. But that's the same in every business book. What I liked was that Mr. Ackerman uses a conversational style that makes the book easy to read. And unless you are like a few of us, that simply buy and read every marketing book, as a matter of course...you wouldn't know the content is not new. But so what?
For the price of a decent lunch, you get essentially a complete course in marketing for small business owners.
Virtually every type of marketing is covered (or at least mentioned). The one thing I noticed is that Mr. Ackerman didn't talk about online selling, especially with Social Media. I agree with his reasons. Eventually, we'll be using these venues to market...but for now, advertising, joint ventures, publicity, and referrals are what make the cash register ring. And these are covered well in the book.
The book is promotional, in that it leads to his websites (expertly done too), and other products. But you won't mind, the content is easily worth it.
I also recommend The Unfair Advantage Small Business Advertising Manual Subtitled; How to use Newspaper, Direct Mail, Radio, Cable TV, Yellow Pages, and other advertising ... profits in your retail or service business.
The content is complementary, but not competing with Mr. Ackerman's book. Plus, I wrote it...(see how you can use reviews to advertise your own product? That's something to remember)
Implement this.

Perfect for right now. Ackerman's expertise in marketing is what anyone with their own small business (products or services) needs to have. Easy to read. Essential to implement.
