William Enslen Jr asked:

Be smart, play smart, and learn how to play craps the right way!

Chances are slim that you'll ever play in a game with crooked dice at a modern casino. However, every now and then, some idiot tries to cheat the system by inserting crooked dice into the game. By adhering to strict policies for controlling the game, casinos eventually catch even the most skilled slight-of-hand artists.

Each player must handle the dice with only one hand and must not bring the dice outside the table. These two simple rules make the cheat's job extremely tough. To make it more difficult, the table has a mirror along the entire length of the wall opposite the boxman so the boxman can easily see if the shooter is "palming" dice. Additionally, each time a die leaves the table after a roll, the die doesn't come back into play until after the boxman thoroughly inspects it. The dice are replaced at random times during the day and typically don't remain in play for more than 24 hours.

Crooked dice come in many forms, such as loaded, painted, capped, tripped, bricks, and floaters. Loaded dice are heavier on one side. Painted dice have a solution applied to one side to make it stickier. Capped dice are shaved on one or more sides and the removed material is replaced by a material with different bounce characteristics. Tripped dice have their edges altered so they're not all equal. Bricks (a.k.a. flats) have one side shaved to reduce the surface area of the adjoining sides. Floaters (because they float in water) have an off-center hole inside them. Shapes are dice that aren't perfect cubes (some or all sides are either concave or convex).

The intent of crooked dice, regardless of their form, is to alter the likelihood of certain numbers appearing. Even a slight change in the odds of a certain number appearing may be enough to change a small house advantage into a small player advantage. "Passers" are crooked dice modified to favor point numbers, while "missouts" are modified to favor the number 7.

Now you know! Remember, learn how to play craps the right way.

Tracy Falbe asked:

If you have ever played craps, you probably noticed the don’t pass betting area that wraps around the table right beside the pass line. Chances are that no one had a bet on it either. This does not mean that it is a bad bet. In fact, the don’t pass is the best bet on the craps table.

Mathematically, with a don’t pass bet the casino only has a 1.36 % advantage over you. Once a point is established, and you can lay odds against the point number, the house advantage begins to drop dramatically. If you lay double odds, the advantage for the casino is 0.45%.

So why is it that you so rarely see players betting the don’t pass? First of all, it is poorly promoted by casinos as an option. When you walk up to the table and ask how to play, the dealer will tell you to make a pass line bet. It’s not unheard of for a dealer to suggest the don’t pass, but it is done infrequently.

Secondly, people often are not interested in playing the don’t pass. They feel that they are betting against the shooter and that this is rude and will bring them bad luck. To be honest, a don’t pass bet is betting against the shooter. The person throwing the dice is trying to roll the point number before rolling a seven. However, the don’t pass bet will win if the seven DOES roll before the point number is repeated.

Although business and social forces discourage don’t pass betting, it remains an option on the game and there is no reason not to play it. The seven is the most common number that the dice are going to roll and this means it is more likely that the don’t pass will win when there is a point number.

The toughest part about winning on the don’t pass is during the come out roll. At this stage of the game the don’t pass will lose when a seven or eleven roll. But if your bet can survive the threat posed by the seven during the come out roll, then you have an excellent chance of winning.

Sometimes don’t pass players are so concerned about surviving the come out roll that they place proposition bets on any seven, eleven, and/or twelve. Their strategy is to recoup the loss on the don’t pass with a win from the proposition bet, but DO NOT do this. Hedging your bets is only a good idea with political contributions and should not be done in a casino. All proposition bets are a waste of money and should only be played purely for fun. If you are going to play the don’t pass, stick with it and do not be distracted by other bets on the table.

Playing the don’t pass often requires patience. You make your don’t pass bet, lay your odds bet, and then have to wait for the seven to roll before the point number. It might actually take a while for the don’t pass to win because many rolls of numbers inconsequential to your bet might be rolled before you win. With this patience factor in don’t pass betting, it can be too tedious for some people to enjoy.

Even if don’t pass betting lacks the glamour of pass line bets, it is the best bet on the table according to the mathematics of probability. Playing the don’t pass is not meant for those rare times when a craps table is full of screaming players who are winning fantastically. This is a hot table in which the shooter is actually rolling the point numbers, and you definitely should not be on the don’t pass when this happens. Fortunately, it is easy to switch to the pass line if you want to do so because you can pick up your don’t pass bet whenever you want. You are not required to leave it there like a pass line bet.

Many a craps player having lost a bunch of money pursuing the dream of a big win on the pass line has won back money by grinding away at the don’t pass on a cold table. Some craps players are devoted don’t pass players and they never bother with trying to win at a hot table. To successfully play the don’t pass you will likely need patience and the discipline to avoid making other bets counterproductive to your goal of winning.

Home Alarm

Freddie Johnson asked:

In How To Play Poker Texas Holdem Style - Part II
we talked about what takes place each step of the
way during the betting rounds of a hand of texas
holdem poker. Now we're going to walk through a
sample hand of texas holdem to give you a more
concrete idea of how a hand is played. You'll be
playing texas holdem in no time.

As I mentioned in part II there are four rounds
of betting in limit texas holdem. Round one
takes place before the flop and you can bet in
one-unit increases.

Round two is directly after the flop (three community
cards are dealt) and the same betting format is played
out. You can bet and raise in one-unit increases.

Round three takes place after the fourth card (fourth
street or the turn card) is dealt. All bets and raises
are now made in two-unit increases.

Round four takes place after the fifth card (fifth
street or the river card) is dealt. All bets and raises
are now made in two-unit increases.

Let's run through a sample limit holdem hand so you can
see how this works. We'll go with a $2-$4 limit holdem
game as we discussed in part II. The dealer deals out
two cards face down to everyone in the game.

The small blind of $1 and the big blind of $2 have been
anted up. Player one holds ace-10 off suit (A-10) and
raises, making it $4 to call the bet. Players 2, 3 and
4 all fold. Player five holds A-Q and calls. Player
six folds. The dealer and the small blind fold. The
big blind calls with J-9. Remember he already has $2
in the pot so it only costs him $2 to call the bet.

The dealer deals the flop and the three community cards
show up 10-4-8. The situation has now changed. Player
five no longer holds the bet hand although he may think
so based on the flop. The big blind how has a potential
straight draw and player one has a pair of tens with a
top kicker.

The big blind bets the $2 on his straight draw. Both
player one and five call the $2 bet. Even though player
five didn't hit a pair, based on the flop he feels he
may still have the strongest hand, although he's unsure
about another player being on a straight draw with the
10 and 8 on the flop.

A Q comes down on the turn. The big blind has hit his
straight and makes a $4 bet. Remember, we are now in
betting round three and the bets have doubled. Player
1 still thinks his tens may be good and he calls the
$4 bet. Player five also calls, now holding a pair of
queens with an ace high kicker.

The dealer flips over the river card, another 10. The
big blind, having already hit his straight, makes another
$4 bet. Player one, holding trips (three of a kind)
raises the bet to $8. Player five wisely folds his
queens. The big blind calls the $4 raise of player one.

The players flip their hole cards face up to determine
who won the hand. Player 1, thinking he must've won, is
shocked to see that his three of a kind falls to the
big blind's queen high straight. Ouch!

The first of these two discs gathers all Gershwin's commercially issued discs as a pianist, including the two abridged Rhapsody in Blue traversals, Gershwin accompanying the Astaire siblings, and twelve solo sides. Hearing the composer play his own music is like getting your ears cleaned out from 75 years of interpretive maulings. Gershwin's crisp touch, clear-cut and unsentimental phrasing, and rhythmic verve comes through more convincingly in these flat discs than in his much-vaunted piano rolls. Also included are the composer-supervised first recordings of An American in Paris and selections from Porgy & Bess, along with a flawed yet revelatory aircheck of Gershwin playing the finale of his concerto. No Gershwin lover should be without this important collection. --Jed Distler

David Udjat asked:

Believe it or not while you may hear all of the hollering and yelling at the craps table, there are certain unwritten rules of etiquette that are expected to be followed. The first rule is to be courteous to dealers, casino staff and other players. Casinos do their best to promote the image of playing craps as being exciting and fun, but sometimes a player who has had too much to drink may take the party atmosphere too seriously and be just too wild.

When you first walk up to the table wait to buy your chips until the shooter is done shooting or until the dealer asks if you want to "buy-in." Always place your cash on the table and NEVER try to hand it to the dealer. The dealer is not allowed to take money directly from any player and vice versa. All transactions must be on the felt layout so that the infamous eye in the sky can ensure there is no funny business going on between a dealer and the player. Once you put your cash on the table tell the dealer "change only please." Otherwise, it may be considered a bet.

The dealer will then take your money and lay it out so that the box person can see how much it is and then the dealer will place you chips either in front of you or on the Come area of the layout. The box person will then put your cash in the cash box through a hole in the table. It is kind of the casinos way of telling you to say "bye-bye" to your money. They will use a lot of psychological tricks to keep your cash.

Once the dealer places your chips in front of you it is your responsibility to pick-up your chips and place them in the chip rack. If you do not remove your chips from the table, it may be considered a bet. Don't worry about hurrying to remove your chips from the table too much because the dealers will give you plenty of time to pick up your chips from the layout. The stickperson will keep the dice in the middle of the table until the dealers are finished paying the winning bets, collecting the losing bets or making change for new players (and for people who need to reach into their pockets to buy more chips).

Always, always, always keep your hands above the chip rack (above the rail). Do not let your hands or fingers hang over the edge of the table. Many players are superstitious and believe that if the dice accidentally hit your hand or fingers that it will cause a 7 to appear. It is bad luck to let the dice hit another person's hands or fingers. This is why you will see other players getting very upset if someone is reaching in at the last moment to make a bet.

When you are the shooter, use only one hand to hold the dice. Do not rub the dice with both hands. The casinos do not allow players to rub the dice with both hands because it grinds the edges. Using one hand to control the dice also helps to assure the table crew that you are not trying to switch dice or that you are not a dice mechanic (a player who replaces the official casino dice with crooked dice).

Do not spend an excessive amount of time setting the dice or going through any lengthy routine. The other players and dealers will expect a person to roll the dice within 3 to 4 seconds of receiving them from the stick person.

Always be nice to the dealers. Always toke the dealers. If the dealers are rude or not courteous to you, you have the option to leave the table or the casino. For the most part the dealers are nice and will help you - - so long as you treat them fairly. I routinely toke the dealers after a win and generally ask them where they want to place their tokes as a bet. The dealers appreciate this gesture because it allows them to "get into" the game and if they win on there bet, your $1 or $2 could be as much as $10 or more. Contrary to popular belief, the dealers are paid mostly from tips.

It is considered bad luck to mention the word "seven" during a roll. It is also generally considered rude to ask to "color out" or to "color up" in the middle of a shooter's roll.

Be polite to the cocktail waitress. If you request a beverage (if you are playing it better be non-alcoholic), toke her a $1 chip. The cocktail waitress earns most of her money on tips.

Simply stated, be courteous and respectful, avoid behavior that is rude, pushy or belligerent. Do not attempt to force your way into a crowded table. If there isn't room on the rail for you to place your chips in a separate section, you should not be there. Especially do not attempt to push your way into a hot table next to the shooter.

If you are only watching a companion, friend or partner and are not betting, and have no intention of making a bet, do not stand at the rail. Leave the space for another player who does want to get in on the action.
