For decades, NFL Films has created the magnificent sounds associated with the game of football. As a fan, it is impossible to hear the classic orchestrations of Sam Spence without being transplanted onto the gridiron. Featuring the compositions of staff composers Tom Hedden and Dave Robidoux--the 4-time Emmy-award winning composers who give wings to every Films production--Autumn Thunder is the essence of the game and the very heart of NFL Films.

Football's appeal comes from the vicarious joys of seeing huge men racing around a field trying to knock each other's heads off, right? Not for the millions of people who grew up on the Sunday-morning highlight shows compiled by NFL films (which, through the magic of cable, can now be seen pretty much whenever you turn the TV on). The stylized slow-motion storytelling made the violence seem like a vicious ballet--something that Sam Peckinpah, John Woo, and Ringo Lam have also accomplished in their films--but what's a ballet without music? Sam Spence and Tom Hedden composed a series of classic themes that emphasized the relentless power and dangerous beauty of football (complete with marching drums, heroic horns, and dramatic string sections) to complement the highlights, and John Facenda's poetic narrations brought the whole thing together. Facenda possesses the deepest rumble of a voice this side of James Earl Jones, and listening to him narrate highlights form last week's game makes it sound as if the game were a timeless classic played decades in the past. The Power and the Glory is truly an unexpected pleasure. --Randy Silver

Although it received no awards, Jerry Goldsmith's music for this endearing football drama is his most-heard work after Patton. Goldsmith reteamed with the filmmakers of Hoosiers for this similar true-life account of a sports underdog, in this case pint-size Rudy Ruettiger, who dreamed of playing for Notre Dame. Goldsmith is at his best finding the rhythmic Middle America, and the "Tryouts" track illustrates Goldsmith's playful variations of a common movie theme. The fully orchestrated, grandstanding finale is a stirring piece of music that inspires in its own right. These building themes--with a motif of Western movie flair--have made this soundtrack well known, but not connected with the film. Numerous studios have used the score for coming-attraction trailers (including the seemingly passive Good Will Hunting). The full soundtrack is well worth having versus just hearing the oft-used bits. --Doug Thomas

The official tape about the 34th Super Bowl--arguably the best ever--is a feast for the Rams fan. Admirers of the game, let alone Tennessee Titans fans, will be disappointed that three-quarters of the tape's 60 minutes is a yearbook of the Rams' startling turnaround from NFL doormats to champions. The game-by-game recap of the Rams' season is punctuated by player interviews, on-field talk, and the enthusiastic calls of the play-by-play announcers. The NFL Films formula of slick editing, grandstanding music, and the velvet tones of narrator Harry Kalas makes one relive the terrific Super Bowl with the emotional sting intact. It also delivers elements that weren't seen on TV broadcast, including sideline comments by coach Dick Vermeil as he dissects the game and smile-inducing last shot. --Doug Thomas

In 1989, Denver Bronco's quarterback John Elway, a member of the much-heralded quarterback class of 1983, led his underrated Denver team to the Super Bowl, only to suffer a humiliating defeat to the Washington Redskins in front of the whole world. This was the last time the Broncos made an appearance in the big game until 1997, when led by the seemingly ageless John Elway, Denver returned to the Super Bowl. Head coach Mike Shanahan and the rest of the Bronco team made 1997 a personal crusade, steering them to a dozen victories as the NFLs highest scoring team. Unlike 1989, Elway found many able suitors supporting his given talent; offensively Denver threatened from every corner, from the deep threat of Rod Smith to the unstoppable, ubiquitous running of Terrell Davis (eventual Super Bowl MVP). Defensively the rugged belligerence of Neil Smith and Steve Atwater dictated a pass rush orientated defense that dominated all opposition. This memorable video traces the fate of the Denver team from the opening day to their unlikely victory over the heavily favored Green Bay Packers. Sound bites from the huddle and the locker room bring you closer to the heart and soul of the Broncos, creating a touch of humanity and empathy to each special moment, ultimately leading you to salute all these Mile High warriors for what they achieved in 1997. --Jeremy Storey

There seems to be no end to beating-the-odds football movies these days, and if they all peak with a breathless moment of anticipation during a clutch play, then We Are Marshall, based on a true story, has plenty of (mostly good) company. Matthew McConaughey plays Jack Lengyel, who becomes head coach--more or less by default--of Marshall University's rebuilding varsity football team in Huntington, W. Va., after the school's 37-member team and coaches (and a number of others) die in a plane crash in the Appalachian Mountains on Nov. 14, 1970. Facing an indifferent college president (David Strathairn) ready to shut the football program down, a morose assistant coach (Matthew Fox), and a charged-up player (Anthony Mackie) who missed the doomed flight due to an injury, Lengyel is faced with fielding a new team and putting the players through their paces. There are the usual, perhaps too-familiar, training montages and field action, but screenwriter Jamie Linden and director McG (Charlie's Angels) also draw some very good performances from the likes of Kate Mara and Ian McShane, contributing to an emotional tapestry conveying a powerful sense of how such a sizable loss affects a small community. --Tom Keogh On the DVD Introduced by director McG, "Legendary Coaches" (37 minutes) has real-life coach Jack Lengyel (portrayed in the film by Matthew McConaughey) recalling his time at Marshall and reading a letter he received from President Nixon. After the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Elijah Wood could've opted for further big budget epics, but took a sharp left turn with this better-than-average B-movie. Released just after Everything is Illuminated, another offbeat entry, Wood plays journalism student Matt Buckner. In the prologue, he's expelled from Harvard when his over-privileged roommate sets him up to take the fall for his own misdeeds. With nowhere to go, Matt decides to visit his sister, Shannon (Claire Forlani), in London. He's already got a chip on his shoulder when he falls under the sway of Shannon's brother-in-law, Pete (Charlie Hunnam), head of West Ham's football "firm," the Green Street Elite. Matt soon gets caught up in their thuggish antics—to tragic effect. In her feature debut, German-born Lexi Alexander makes a mostly convincing case for the attractions of violence to the emotionally vulnerable, as opposed to the emotionally numb pugilists of the more satirical Fight Club. Unlike David Fincher (by way of Chuck Palahniuk), she plays it straight, except for the stylized fight sequences. Consequently, humor is in short supply, but the young Brit cast, especially Leo Gregory as the surly Bovver, is charismatic and Wood makes his character as believable as possible, i.e. he may seem miscast, but that's the point. Although there's no (direct) correlation between the two, Green Street makes a fine taster for Bill Buford's Among the Thugs, the ultimate dissection of the hooligan mentality. --Kathleen C. This 1993 film by David Anspaugh (Hoosiers) is slowly building a reputation as a minor highlight of '90s movies. Based on a true story, Rudy stars Sean Astin as Rudy Ruettiger, a blue-collar kid whose father (Ned Beatty) worships Notre Dame football but who would never dare to dream that any of his sons could be a part of the team. The film is entirely about Ruettiger's ceaseless if sometimes wavering commitment toward that goal, despite tremendous obstacles in physical stature, education requirements, the dismissiveness of coaches, poverty, his father's envy, and endless delays of one kind or another. This is the sort of film that looks back on a life and says the battle was its own reward, not the glory. Astin is very moving as a boy who becomes a man and watches his world change, often in unexpected ways, through painful determination. Great support from Beatty, Lili Taylor as a hometown girl, and Robert Prosky and Charles S. Dutton as two valuable mentors. --Tom Keogh
