Owning Mahowny List Price: $19.99 Sale Price: $4.24 Used From: $0.80 |
|
Philip Seymour Hoffman adds another great performance to his gallery of losers in Owning Mahowny, an engrossing, fact-based comedy-drama about the perils of compulsive gambling. The subject is hardly new to movies, but as Toronto bank-loan manager Dan Mahowny, Hoffman brings fresh depth and tortured humanity to his portrayal of a man who helplessly feeds his pathological need to gamble with millions in embezzled bank money that he can't afford to lose. His supportive wife (Minnie Driver, barely recognizable beneath a plain-looking wig and glasses) is aware of the problem but not its severity, and in fulfilling the promise of his debut feature Love and Death on Long Island, British director Richard Kwietniowski strikes a delicate balance of humor, adrenalin, and escalating tension, guiding Hoffman, Driver, and an excellent supporting cast (including Long Island's John Hurt) in a quietly suspenseful study of Mahowny's ill-fated impulse. Set in the early 1980s but timeless in its study of dysfunctional behavior, Owning Mahowny is a safe bet for film lovers everywhere. --Jeff Shannon OWNING MAHOWNY - DVD Movie |

How to Make $100,000 a Year Gambling for a Living List Price: $24.95 Sale Price: $8.95 Used From: $6.34 |
|
Is there really such a thing as a professional gambler? The answer is an unequivocal yes! The authors of this book are but two examples. The truth is that there are many thousands of people around the country who make a good living exclusively from gambling. It is not easy but it can be done. The key ideas are to understand which games are beatable and how to beat them. David Sklansky and Mason Malmuth have both spent many years writing about the finer points of poker, blackjack, and other beatable games. (As you will see in the book those other "games" are horses, sports, progressive slots and video poker, casino tournaments, and special promotions. They dont include craps, roulette, keno, or baccarat for reasons explained herein.) This book, however, was written for the not-quite-as-experienced aspiring gambler. It shows you everything you need to learn and do if you want to gamble for a living both from the practical and the technical standpoint. The rest is up to you. |

Be smart, play smart, and learn how to play craps the right way!
Casino personnel usually refer to chips as "cheques," which is of French origin. Technically, there's a difference between a chip and a cheque. A cheque is a chip with a denomination printed on it and is always worth the value of the imprinted denomination. Chips, however, don't have denominations imprinted on them and any color can be worth any amount as defined by the dealer. For example, in a poker tournament, the dealer may define white chips as $1 and blue chips as $10; whereas, in a roulette game, the dealer may define white chips as $0.25 and blue chips as $2. Another example, the cheap red, white, and blue plastic chips you buy at Wal-Mart for your Friday-night poker game are called "chips" because they don't have denominations imprinted on them.
When you plop your money down on the table and hear the dealer say, "Cheque change only," he's simply telling the boxman that a new player wants to exchange cash for chips (cheques), and that the cash on the table is not in play. Cash plays in most casinos, so if you put a $5 bill on the Pass Line just before the shooter rolls the dice and the dealer doesn't exchange your cash for chips, your cash is "live" and "in play." When the dealer says, "Cheque change only," the boxman knows that your cash is not in play.
Technically, in live craps games, we play with cheques, not chips. Occasionally, a player will approach the table, drop a $100 cheque, and tell the dealer, "Cheque change." It's fun to act like a newbie and ask the player, "Hey, I'm new to this game, what's a cheque?" Most of the time, their wacky responses will amuse you.
